Start in Biarritz

Biarritz is a coastal and seaside city of France, located in the Aquitaine region, in the southwest of the country. It is only 20 km from the border with Spain. Together with the cities of Anglet and Bayona, it is the largest urban area in the region. The main characteristic of Biarritz at the tourist level are its varied beaches, in which the practice of surfing is one of the main activities developed. Already in its origins, Biarritz has been a whaling town, and today also exploits the therapeutic properties of its marine waters, which have certain algae that provide iodine, an element very well received by organisms.

The E70 routes, from Spain, or the A7, A9 and A10 from different French cities arrive in the city of Biarritz. It is also easy to arrive by train, with direct connection to the capitals Madrid y Paris. For any other origin, the simplest thing is to arrive by plane at Biarritz Anglet Bayona Airport, located just 5 km from the city center.

In the vicinity of the international airport there is a first concentration of hotels, mainly oriented to travelers, with a category of 3 or 4 stars, mainly cheap hotels. There is also some luxury option for travelers with higher aspirations. Of course, the largest conglomeration of hotels exists in the vicinity of the beaches, right in the center of Biarritz. To get there from the airport, a taxi or the 14 bus line travel the reduced distance in less than fifteen minutes.

Regions in Biarritz

The different neighborhoods or regions of Biarritz have a direct relationship with the beach to which they are closest. So there are three differentiated regions: the zone of Puerto de los Pescadores, in the heart of the city, the Grande Plage (or Playa Grande) located to the north, and the Coast of the Basques, located south of the urban center.

With a wide permanent offer of hotels Biarritz concentrates its accommodation offer in those cheap hotels, mainly between 3 and 4 stars. The port area mainly has many 3 star options, just like the southern beaches, on the Costa de los Vascos. For its part, the Grande Plage gives rise to the most luxurious establishments, including also some option 5 stars with all-inclusive.

Visits for the stay in Biarritz

The main attraction for visitors to the town of Biarritz is, without doubt, the extension of fine sand beaches for more than 6 km, with a profusion of marine algae that give therapeutic effects to bathers. The greatest concentration of hotels is located in the vicinity of the beaches, whose nerve center coincides with the location of the original Puerto de Pescadores. This port is currently more tourist than economic activity, and many restaurants and bars are concentrated in what were the old fishermen's houses. There, fish and seafood are a must for the traveler.

Certain curiosities

It's not something new surf development in Biarritz. Few know that it was actually here, in 1957, where surfing was introduced in Europe, in what is now known as Costa de los Vascos beach. It is curious that this small enclave was the first place on the continent to practice this sport, but even more striking is knowing that since the 11th century this town had been established as a port for whale fishermen, and so it was until the turn of the century XIX, when the renowned French poet and playwright Victor Hugo arrived in this town in the year 1843, and left his immortal phrase about the city saying that he had never known a place more wonderful and charming than Biarritz.

After that event, the wife of Emperor Napoleon III arrived in Biarritz and built a magnificent residence by the sea, the Hotel du Palais, which was the beginning of the transformation of Biarritz from a whaling port to a fashionable tourist destinations and city Spa.
