Bremen is the oldest coastal city in Germany. It was born as a small fishing village and grew to become one of the main ports in Europe and the second largest city in northern Germany in terms of population.

Take a day or two to explore Bremen's historic neighborhoods and buildings, which are fairly well preserved. Bremen is located northwest of Hanover, next to the river Weser, near the North Sea. It contains numerous examples of German Gothic and Renaissance architecture, such as the Schötting, 17th-century town hall, and Böttcherstrasse, a reproduction of a medieval street lined with restaurants, shops and galleries. The street, which was rebuilt after the Second World War, was designed to recreate German life in the city during that time.

You can walk through the Schnoor neighborhood, where you will find artists and artisans selling African souvenirs, jewelry and Christmas accessories in the shops and art galleries located in the medieval buildings of the area. This historic restored site, located east of the city, was an old fisherman's home.

If you are interested in haute couture, come to Lloyd-Passage, which is full of chains of exclusive signatures. You can also go to the Waterfront shopping center, located next to the Weser River, which has more than 80 stores selling fashion, accessories, footwear and leather goods. In addition, various festivals, concerts and food fairs are held throughout the year.

In the shopping areas of Bremen you will find many restaurants, but if you are looking for something more traditional, you have to go to Schlachte, on the banks of the Weser river. In Böttcherstrasse, you can try the fish and cabbage dishes typical of the city, such as Labskaus, a plate of sailors based on potatoes and meat.

You can follow the guided tour of the Beck's brewery, available in English and German. Or enjoy a night out in the Schlachte and Viertel areas, with a younger audience. If you are looking for a quieter alternative, try the Böttcherstrasse pubs and wineries.
